Accessible Media

The Accessible Media department of Student Life Disability Services serves as a production and resource center for faculty/staff to provide their course materials in accessible formats. Course materials includes textbooks, handouts, articles, exams, and videos. Teamwork is essential in the accessible media production process. Students, faculty, and SLDS staff each play an important role in ensuring access!

Accessible formats enable students who use assistive technology, such as screen-enlargers or text-to-speech software, to have equitable access to their classes. Accessible formats can also prove helpful for non-disabled students, such as English as a Second Language (ESL) students and students with different learning styles. You can learn more about the benefits and elements of universal design here.

Common Accessible Media Formats:

  • PDF (image or searchable)
  • RTF (Rich Text Format)
  • Paper enlargements
  • Braille
  • Captioned videos
  • MP3 (Audio format)
  • xhtml (Audible mathematics output format)
