1. ODS to have Open House during Welcome Week 2007!

 

The Office for Disability Services will have its annual Open House on Tuesday, September 18 from 1 to 4pm in Room 150, Pomerene Hall. Counselors will be available to answer questions about registering with our office and accessing accommodations and services. Members of the student organization Unity will be present as well as members of Adapted Rec Sports. There will be tours and technology demonstrations in the Assistive Technology Training Center computer lab, and information about Exam Accommodations and the Alternative Media lab will be given.

Rosemarie Rossetti, Ph.D. is a powerful, internationally known speaker, trainer, consultant, writer, and publisher. Rosemarie delivers presentations that bring out the best in people.

   Dr. Bauer is a certified rehabilitation counselor for a private practice and is an Associate Professor at Marietta College. He is well published in the disability arena. His keynote will have you reflecting on times past and how to focus on a better future for people with disabilities. His insightful program will be educational, interactive and humorous. He received the Maureen Fitzgerald “Leader of the Year” from the Ohio Governor and his Council for People with Disabilities. He is a Senate-appointed commissioner for Ohio Legal Rights (2004-07).

4.  ODS Welcomes New Staff Addition to Alternative Media Production Lab

 

We are pleased to announce the addition of Miss Ali Hickey, Information Associate to the staff of the Office for Disability Services.  Ali will be working in the Alternative Media Production Lab along with Sarah Terry.  Ali comes to us with a strong interest and great enthusiasm for the technology used in Alternative Media.  She has a strong working knowledge of the types of materials and the formats of those materials which are currently being used in courses taught at OSU.   She is a huge fan of coffee, Harry Potter and children's literature. Please stop by and introduce yourself to Ali if you are an Alternative Media user so that she can get to know you and your accommodation needs.



5. Unity President Welcomes you Back to Classes!


I hope everyone has had a fantastic summer and that you are ready for an exciting year with Unity!   Unity has a great team of officers this year:

We already have a few events planned, so mark your calendars:

  • The Student Involvement Fair is scheduled for Monday, September 17 from 12:00 to 4:00PM. This is a great opportunity for us to reach a lot of students. We really need volunteers from 10:00 – 4:00, so please let me know if you are able to come even if you can only make it for a short period of time.
  • There will be a Beep Ball game on Thursday, September 20 from 3:00 – 6:00 in the South Oval. We will be joining with Sports FUSION, ODS, and ARS to sponsor this event.  This game is tons of fun, so be sure and bring some friends!
  • Our first meeting will be Tuesday, October 2 at 5:00PM. We will meet and greet with new and existing members, discuss Unity’s plans for this year, and work on a service project.  If you have any ideas for events or projects, please share them at this meeting. Everyone is eager to hear from you!

    Unity is going to do amazing things this year. I am very glad that you are all a part of this organization!

6.       Sports F.U.S.I.O.N. - Finding Unified Sports in OSU’s Networks’ Upcoming Events!

 

The mission of the Sports F.U.S.I.O.N. group is to provide Ohio State students with and without disabilities the information, opportunities, and accommodations to fully participate in recreational programs at The Ohio State University. Our vision is that all Ohio State students, with various levels of ability, will be knowledgeable about and feel comfortable participating in the wide array of activities available through Recreational Sports, including cardio and weight training, team sports, fitness classes, aquatics, climbing and other outdoor sports. Here is a list of upcoming Sports F.U.S.I.O.N. events:

Afterwards, we will be playing wheelchair basketball in the gym.  This will be an all-inclusive game, so we will be providing wheelchairs for anyone who needs it.

7.  Dr. Jane Fernandes - Free Public Lecture.

Drinko Hall Auditorium, The Ohio State University. October 4, 2007.

Dr. Jane Fernandes was appointed to be the ninth President of Galludet University on 5/1/06, the appointment was withdrawn on 10/29/06 after seven months of protest. Dr. Fernandes was born deaf and raised in the Oral (rather than ASL) tradition and will offer her unique observations on Deafness as a dimension of diversity within society and on diversity within the Deaf community. Set up a one-to-one consultation with the ARS Coordinator Lindsay Meyer, or other available ARS supervisor to find out about all of the recreational opportunities available to your individual needs (RPAC members only, which includes fee paying students). 9. BrailleNote Workshop Announcement!. 

 

HumanWare will be conducting three BrailleNote workshops in Columbus and Cincinnati in the month of September.  For more details on the Basic and Advanced Workshops in Columbus on the 19th and 20th of September please contact Sherry Offenbaker of CISAM at 614-644-8468.  For more details on the Advanced Workshop at the Cincinnati Association for the Blind on September 21st please contact Kevin Dobens at 513-221-8558.

 

These hands-on workshops provide an opportunity to learn more about new features in KeySoft 7.5 like support for accessing RFB&D materials and accessories like the Oxford Concise Dictionary.  They will provide participants with ample opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the advantages of the BrailleNote in educational settings.  Additional details on the content to be covered and objectives of the workshop are available.

Dow Chemical Company has summer internship opportunities at its corporate headquarters in Midland MI and selected locations in the US. All qualified college students who meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply:

 

  • Completed 60 hours of course work at the time of internship
  • Majoring in a discipline from which Dow hires
  • GPA of 2.7 or higher

7th Annual Ohio Sibling Conference

This unique gathering is unlike anything else in the United States. Designed to give adult siblings of brothers and sisters with disabilities an opportunity to meet, befriend, and develop relationships with people in similar situations. The goal for the conference is that attendees will leave becoming better informed decision- makers and will take with them the ability, desire and necessary tools to prepare and secure the future health and well-being of their sibling, themselves and their families. 

Only at the Ohio SIBS conference can adult brothers and sisters of people with MR/DD gather together to hear directly from MR/DD professionals, educators, politicians and other Adult Siblings. The conference is an opportunity to share information, ideas and family experiences.

 

Join us in a safe, supportive environment that provides an honest look at our family roles as caregivers, advocates and siblings. Our hope is to enhance your knowledge base so that you may enhance the lives of your siblings and other family members.

Jennifer Owensby
After receiving her BA in Journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill, Jennifer Owensby has worked on the production of more than 25 feature films. Her first film (“The Teachings of Jon”) about her older brother’s struggle with Down Syndrome, is currently airing on Public Television nationwide, and recently won the 2007 Silver Telly Award for Outstanding Documentary.

 

Susan Rotkowski
Susan is the District Manager of Disability Education for Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Development where she provides support to staff who serve students and adults with disabilities. Susan now serves as Co-Director of Project SEARCH. She previously worked as a Job Placement Coordinator for students and graduates with disabilities.

 

William Hall
William Hall serves as Director of Programs for the Ohio Community Service Council. The inclusion of individuals with disabilities in community service work is a primary goal for the Council and its national counterpart, The Corporation for National and Community Service. William is also the parent of a child with special needs.

 

Anne Guthrie
An adult sibling herself, Anne Guthrie has coordinated sibling events in New York, Kansas and Washington. Anne has a long-standing interest in adult sibling issues and currently represents the Sibling Support Project in collaboration with University of Illinois at Chicago’s Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Aging with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

13. Beep Ball on the South Oval!

 

Join the Office for Disability Services, Unity, Adapted Rec Sports and Sports FUSION for an afternoon of Beep Ball.  Beep Baseball is a form of baseball that is adapted for individuals with visual impairments.  Everyone can play at this event! Blindfolds will be provided!

 

So, come out and learn the fundamentals, rules, and tips of the game, and also participate in an actual game featuring students, staff, and any others who would like to participate!
