April is Disability Awareness Month- Celebrate with ODS!

 

ODS is celebrating Disability Awareness Month by sponsoring the following events throughout the month of April.  Please join us!

 

 

The Arts

 

§         Dancing Wheels (4/2/08 7:00PM Room 200 Campbell Hall)

            Join us as we feature Dancing Wheels, the first modern dance company to integrate professional stand-up and sit-down (wheelchair) dancers, who have             performed, taught and inspired children and adults of all abilities around the world!

 

§         Art Exhibit and Open Reception (4/3/08 4:30PM Bricker Hall, Floor 2)

      Open reception & art exhibit related to or featuring the creativity of artists with disabilities. This reception is co-sponsored by                                          the Office of Minority Affairs' Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center!

 

 

Sports

 

Play in open games and compete at the RPAC and Outdoor Adventure Center (OAC) with faculty, staff, & students with or without a disability!

 

Sports FUSION will also host a series of sports events, including:

 

§         Goal Ball (4/6/08 10AM-12Noon, RPAC South Gym)

            A highly competitive sport played three-against-three, indoors on a gym floor- primarily by blind and visually impaired athletes.  http://www.goalball.biz/!

 

§         Wheelchair Basketball (4/13/08 10AM-12Noon, Tom W. Davis Gym courts 3-4)  

            It is based on basketball with some adaptations to reflect the presence of the wheelchair, and to harmonize the different levels of disabilities players have             http://www.nwba.org/index.php!

 

§         Beep Ball (4/18/08 3-7PM on the South Oval)

      Beep ball is a form of baseball for the blind. It is played with a softball that has a beeper placed in it. The beeper makes a loud sound which the players use to locate the ball to hit and field. http://www.nbba.org/about_game.htm!

 

§         Indoor Rock Climbing at the OAC (4/20/08 10AM-12Noon at the OAC Climbing Wall)

      The Tom W. Davis Climbing Center features two state-of-the-art climbing walls, providing challenges and fun for beginning and experienced climbers alike. Together, the Nicros Art Wall and the West Coast Wall offer more than 50 different routes for you to test your mettle on. Please call the climbing center at (614) 247-8680 for more information. The Climbing Wall can be Adapted based upon specific needs!

Educational

 

§         Interacting with Interpreters

      (April 23rd , 12:00N-1:00PM, Rm. 102 Pomerene Hall)

      A brown bag event to teach useful etiquette and guidelines for interacting with American Sign Language interpreters and transcribers!

 

§         Autism Movie Night featuring “Snow Cake”

      (April 7th, 6:30PM, Rm. 14 University Hall)

      A drama focused on the friendship between a high-functioning autistic woman and a man who is traumatized after a fatal car accident (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448124/)!

 

 

§         ODS Assistive Technology Training Center Open House

            (April 16t, 9AM-11AM: Rm. 120 Pomerene Hall)

            Visit the computer lab for demos of the latest in assistive technology hardware & software!

 

 

  • ODS Recognition Reception (April 25th, 3-5PM, at the James Cancer Clinic, Rms. 518 A&B)                                                                           Join us as we celebrate and recognize exceptional students, faculty and staff for their work, diligence, and contributions throughout the year!
