The poster session highlighting student work related to disability seems the ideal way to welcome  the oldest journal in the field of Disability Studies.  The Disability Studies Quarterly (http://www.dsq-sds.org/) is a peer reviewed multidisciplinary international journal of interest to scholars, public policy advocates, visual & performing artists, writers, and others concerned with disability and people with disabilities. DSQ features work across the range of methods, perspectives, and breadth that the multidisciplinary field of Disability Studies embraces. It is committed to developing theoretical and practical knowledge about disability and to promoting the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society.

The journal is currently edited by two Ohio State University faculty members, professors Brenda Jo Brueggemann, English & Scot Danforth, College of Teaching and Learning who are also members of the Disability Studies steering committee, and published with support from the Ohio State University library. Please join us in wishing the editor’s good luck and welcoming the Quarterly to campus.

* DSQ is supported primarily by the Society for Disability Studies (SDS): http://www.disstudies.org/ *

4.  Gov. Strickland Declares April is Autism Awareness Month!

The Centers for Disease Control now reports that the incidence of autism in the United States is 1 in 150 children. There are over 10,000 families in Ohio dealing with this urgent public health problem every day. Ohio individuals with autism, advocates, families, and state legislators have gathered for the Autism Awareness Rallies at the Statehouse this past week. This has led Governor Ted Strickland to declare April as Autism Awareness Month in Ohio.

State citizens have been calling for immediate legislative action to respond to this growing health crisis, including passage of HB 170 Health Insurance coverage, a Senate companion bill of HB 170, a Medicaid Waiver and many other issues.

 About Autism Speaks:

Autism Speaks is a 501(c)3 dedicated to increasing awareness of the growing autism epidemic and to raising money to fund scientists who are searching for a cure. It was founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright. Bob Wright is Vice Chairman and Executive Officer, General Electric and the former Chairman and CEO of NBC Universal. Autism Speaks and Cure Autism Now (CAN) recently combined operations, bringing together two of the leading organizations dedicated to accelerating and funding biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism spectrum disorders; to increasing awareness of the nation's fastest growing developmental disorder; advocating for the needs of affected families; and providing family services to answer those tough questions families might need to ask, but don’t know who to turn to.

Our Mission:

We are dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society; and to bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder.

No other organization offers the nationwide, comprehensive mission funding Research, Awareness, Advocacy and Community Services. As such, Autism Speaks serves as the national umbrella for the entire autism community. Autism Speaks unique approach works to advance the science, provide a united voice for the community, and invites the general public in to become part of our crusade.

We Need Your Help:

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder, affecting 1 in 150 children born today. Despite the high prevalence and growing health care costs associated with caring for a child with autism, autism research receives less than 5% of the research funding of many other, less prevalent, childhood diseases.
