1. Scholarship Deadline Extended to Friday, April 10, 2009!
There are three scholarships offered annually by the Office for Disability Services. Two are for students who have a visual impairment and one is for students who have mobility impairment. Complete and submit the necessary application forms and you could be awarded scholarship money for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year!
The three available scholarships are listed below and application forms are available at the ODS website@ www.ods.osu.edu/current_scholarship.asp.
The Ohio Lions Foundation Helen Keller Scholarship
The Ohio Lion's Foundation awards four $2750 scholarships to qualified students with visual impairments who are attending OSU and are Ohio residents. To apply, complete the application form, include a copy of your college transcript, and a one to two page essay. The transcript does not need to be an official transcript.
The Ohio State University Charles W. Medick Scholarship
To apply for the Charles W. Medick Scholarship you must have a visual disability and complete the application form. The number of scholarships and their monetary values vary each year. Include a copy of your college transcript, (an unofficial transcript is OK), and a one to two page essay.
Anna Sborowitz Scholarship
The Anna Sborowitz scholarship is awarded each academic year. It is awarded to undergraduate students with a mobility impairment and severe limitations in movement or use of one or more of their extremities. All applicants must demonstrate financial need and satisfactory progress in their academic pursuits.
In addition, students must be full-time or part-time (7 or more credit hours) and showing substantial progress toward a degree at The Ohio State University. The number of scholarships and their monetary values vary each year.

ALSO: The William and Francis Smith Junk Endowed Award Now Offered!
This annual award is to be given to a student with a physical disability who is enrolled at The Ohio State University and who lives in the Creative Living facility in Columbus, Ohio. Recipients will be determined by the University Committee for Student Financial Aid and ODS. Preference is given to a student demonstrating academic ability and with the greatest financial need. To be considered, a student must write a personal statement, which includes background, achievements, goals, and needs. The application and accompanying materials should be placed in the MAIL-IN box at either Creative Living complex. The number of scholarships and their monetary values vary each year.

We need you to bring in your textbook receipts before we can release your converted materials to you. We also need you to provide us with copies of your course syllabi (for all classes that have or plan to receive Alternative Media). Please either bring in a paper copy (for us to copy) or e-mail us your syllabi to Ali ahickey@studentlife.osu.edu or Sarah terry.5@osu.edu.
CARMEN Materials: Each quarter there are a growing number of materials posted on CARMEN for students to use. We want to let you know that we can assist you with any of the required readings that are posted, however we need to hear from you to let us know if you need help. Please contact Sarah or Ali if you need your readings from CARMEN converted into your desired format.
Bookshare.org
The Ohio State University Office for Disability Services is partnering with Bookshare.org. The following is a brief excerpt from the Bookshare.org website explaining what they have to offer to students who are authorized to use Alternative Media. Bookshare.org (http://www.bookshare.org)
n.d. (Web). 8/13/08. Bookshare.org is a web-based system supplying accessible books in digital formats designed for people with disabilities. These digital formats are the NISO/DAISY XML-based format for the next generation of talking books, and the BRF format for Braille devices and printers. Access to copyrighted books from Bookshare.org is limited to people with bona fide print disabilities and the schools and nonprofit organizations serving them. An array of security protections and Digital Rights Management solutions ensure that these books are available only to authorized users. End
Memberships can be obtained through the institutional membership which the Office for Disability Services (ODS) has established with Bookshare.org. Obtaining books through Bookshare.org will depend on the type of membership you select. 3. 2009 Access Awards: Call for Nominations!
As part of Disability Awareness Month, UNITY - A Perfect World for Students with Disabilities, distributes awards that recognize faculty and staff who have made Ohio State a better place for students with disabilities.
We invite you to nominate those who have personally affected your experience at Ohio State. For example, this person may be a professor who was very accommodating or a staff person who has contributed to disability awareness efforts.
The Winners will be selected and the awards will be presented at The Office for Disability Service's Recognition Reception on Friday, April 24 at 3:00 pm.
You have TWO Options to Submit your Entry:
1. Please Print and return completed forms to Caity McCandless at the Office for Disability Services in 150 Pomerene Hall. Please use the back of the form to explain why you have nominated this person and how he/she has affected your experience at Ohio State.
Nominations are due by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, April 15, 2009.

4. Disability Awareness Month Did You Know?!
- 1970 - OSU starts to remove architectural barriers
- 1973 - The Library for the Visually Impaired established
- 1973- OSU's Adapted transportation system started
- 1974 - The Office for the Physically Impaired is created in Personnel Services and located in the Student Services Building
- 1977 - First student with a learning disability is identified and served
