What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology is hardware or software designed to be used to compensate for disability or impairment. Assistive technology provides individuals with disabilities equal access to information and products.

Why is it Important?

The most important aspect of assistive technology is the independence that it offers students with disabilities. With assistance, a student can maximize independence in reading, writing, and performance. Such independence increases work rate, employability and self-esteem.

Assistive technology does another very important thing. It helps institutions meet the letter and spirit of disability law by allowing students with disabilities the same level of access to computing technology in support of instruction and programming on campus.
