Interpreting, Transcribing, and FM Systems for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students
ODS will coordinate interpreting and/or transcribing services for deaf or hard of hearing students registered with the office. Sign language interpreting and transcribing services are available for classroom and lab requirements as well as academic advising and meetings with other university offices.
All ODS interpreters are interviewed by the Interpreter coordinator and are selected based on an assessment of interpreter/transliterating skills, experience in a post-secondary setting, and the ability to handle discourse at this level. While ODS employs certified and non-certified interpreters, RID/NAD certification is encouraged. Family members cannot be hired to serve as interpreter/writer. Transcribers are trained using the Typewell system.

To request interpreting or transcribing services for classroom purposes:
- Inform the Interpreting Services Coordinator of preference for interpreting and interpreting needs (oral, ASL, or PSE) or transcribing. Within reasonable limits, ODS will strive to accommodate your request for a preferred type of service.
- Provide Interpreter coordinator with requested class schedule as soon as you register for classes.
- Report any changes in daily or weekly class schedule to Interpreter coordinator as soon as possible.
- Inform the Interpreter coordinator when interpreting/transcribing services will not be needed or if you will be arriving late to class or a scheduled appointment. An interpreter/transcriber will wait twenty minutes before leaving a class or an appointment. Failure to notify the ODS when services are not needed or if you will be arriving late on three occasions, services will be suspended until you meet with the Interpreter coordinator.
- Request services at least five working days in advance for interpreter/transcribing services that are needed to fulfill any requests for advising, meetings with instructors, or any other university meeting.
- If you develop a good rapport with a particular interpreter and would like to continue working together, you should contact the interpreter coordinator with this request.
Contact the Interpreter coordinator for more information on scheduling interpreters and transcribers for other campus activities or events.
FM SYSTEM/PHONIC EAR
Phonic Ear FM systems are available for students who are in need of amplification in the classroom. Students with hearing impairments and sometimes Central Auditory Processing Disorder often benefit from the use of FM systems.
To request an FM system:
- Contact your ODS counselor who will authorize a meeting with the OSU Speech-Hearing-Language Clinic (SHL).
- Call to schedule an appointment with the SHL Clinic at:
141 Pressey Hall (West Campus) 1070 Carmack Road (614) 292-6251 (Voice or TDD)
- SHL will require your most recent audiogram but the SHL clinic may conduct additional testing to assess your current needs.
- The center will fit you with the FM equipment and train you in its use.
- You will sign a contract with SHL to check out FM equipment for the quarter.
- Return equipment at the end of each quarter to the SHL Clinic.
- Contact the Clinic immediately if you have any difficulty or the equipment is in need of repair.
